The Timanfaya guided walk on Lanzarote

Exploring Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape: the Timanfaya guided walk

Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, is renowned for its stunning volcanic landscapes. Our guidebook to walking in Lanzarote is your ideal companion on your trip.

The Timanfaya National Park, located abutting the north coast in the western part of the island, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

One of the most popular activities in the park is the guided walk through the volcanic terrain.

Booking your guided walk

To embark on the Timanfaya guided walk, you need to reserve a place in advance. The walk is conducted by experienced guides who will provide insights into the park’s geological history and fascinating volcanic phenomena.

Booking can be done online through the official Timanfaya National Park website, or through authorised tour operators.

Cost and process

The cost of the guided walk can be free (as in our guidebook) — or it can vary depending on the tour operator and any additional services included. Generally, the tour operators’ price includes the entrance fee to the park and the services of the guide.

The booking process is usually straightforward and involves selecting your preferred date and time for the walk, providing your personal details, and making payment.

If you are booking the free tour directly with the national park, do not leave it till the last minute. They only take eight people at a time and the tours get booked up very quickly. We suggest booking at least a month in advance.

The Timanfaya guided walk experience

The Timanfaya guided walk takes you through a surreal landscape of volcanic craters, lava fields, and fumaroles.

As you walk, your guide will explain the formation of the park’s unique geological features and share stories about the volcanic eruptions that shaped the island.

Highlights of the walk

Volcanic craters: Explore the depths of volcanic craters and marvel at the rugged beauty of the landscape.
Lava fields: Traverse the vast lava fields, imagining the power of the volcanic eruptions that created them.
Panoramic views: Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the park and the surrounding coast.
Islote de Hilario: If you are doing the walk with a tour operator (the free walk does not include this), you will witness the incredible heat emanating from the earth as your guide places a stick into a hole and it bursts into flames.
Camel ride: Many tour operators offer the option of a camel ride before or after the guided walk, providing a unique and memorable experience.

Preparing for your walk

To make the most of your Timanfaya guided walk, it’s essential to prepare adequately. Here are some tips:

Wear comfortable footwear: Sturdy walking shoes or boots are ideal for navigating the uneven terrain.
Protect yourself from the sun: Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense sunlight.
Stay hydrated: Carry plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially during the warmer months.
Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.
Respect the environment: Adhere to the park’s rules and regulations to preserve the delicate ecosystem.
Stay on the made paths: You may be told by the rangers that it can take three years for a footprint to disappear! And some of the lava tunnels have a very thin crust — your weight could collapse them.

The Timanfaya guided walk offers a truly unforgettable experience. As you explore the park’s otherworldly landscape, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the power of nature and the unique beauty of Lanzarote’s volcanic terrain. Buy our guidebook to walking in Lanzarote.
