The best time for walkers to visit the islands
The best time to visit Malta and Gozo for walking is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November).
The weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller, making it ideal for exploring the islands on foot.
Highlights for walkers
Here are a few suggestions for some fantastic hikes in Malta and Gozo:
Ghadira to Marfa (Walk 4)
This walk highlights the varied landscapes of the Marfa Ridge, where isolated bays and cliff scenery dominate.
The area has also attracted some international hotel chains. Especially on the northern flanks there is a large concentration of Maltese holiday homes.
Falka to Ghallis Tower (Walk 9)
On this easy stroll of 7km (4.4 miles) you will only climb one low hill, and effortlessly take in some of Malta’s pleasant rural scenery.
Rabat to Mgarr (Walk 12)
This walk starts on the outskirts of Mtarfa near Rabat. The route visits the Chadwick Lakes irrigation system and remote hamlets, before exploring some of Malta’s most spectacular cliff scenery.
The closing stretch takes in much of the island’s best farmland and one of its least spoilt villages.
Marsaxlokk to Gudja (Walk 20)
Evidence of early societies are spread throughout Malta. In the course of this ramble you can visit a Bronze Age village and prehistoric cart ruts offering a glimpse into Malta’s rich past.
Mgarr to Sannat (Walk 25)
The hustle and bustle of the ferry port of Mgarr are soon left behind as the walk heads westwards towards the highest cliffs in Gozo.
The final stretch takes in the sprawling village of Sannat and the southern suburbs of Victoria.
