La Gomera: a walking wonderland
La Gomera, one of the smaller Canary Islands, is a hidden gem for hikers. With its lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and charming villages, the island offers a unique and unforgettable walking experience.
Our guidebook to walking in Southern Tenerife and La Gomera is your ideal companion.
Two guides for the price of one: because the most popular way to La Gomera from Europe is via a ferry from southern Tenerife, we have included car tours throughout Tenerife, plus some walks in the south of Tenerife (including two of the most popular, the Masca Gorge and the Barranco del Infierno) in our guide.
Below are some of the highlights of the many fantastic walks on La Gomera.
Raso de la Bruma Circuit
The Raso de la Bruma Circuit is an easy hike and a good introduction to the Garajonay National Park. The trail takes you through a cloud forest, dripping with lichen, where the mist often hangs low, creating a mystical atmosphere.
El Cedro Circuit from Las Mimbreras
The El Cedro Circuit is an easy-moderate hike that starts at the parking area of Las Mimbreras. The trail takes you through a laurel forest, one of the rarest ecosystems in the world.
Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful waterfalls, ancient trees, and a variety of birdlife.
Garajonay Circuit from Imada
The Garajonay Circuit is a moderate circular route that starts at the village of Imada. The trail takes you through the heart of Garajonay National Park, offering stunning views of the island’s lush vegetation and dramatic cliffs.
Taguluche Circuit via the GR132
The Taguluche Circuit is a very strenuous, sometimes vertiginous, circular route in the west of the island. The trail follows the GR132, a long-distance hiking route that traverses the entire island.
The circuit offers stunning views of the island’s rugged coastline, dense forests, and towering mountains.
The best time to visit La Gomera for walking
The best time to visit La Gomera for walking is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.
However, the island can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm. Christmas is high season, as is Easter, when prices rise.
In summer it is usually not too hot for walking, and that has become a popular time to visit (but with climate change, it is hard to predict temperatures from one year to the next).
