Walking in Lanzarote: an introduction

Lanzarote: a volcanic paradise for walkers

Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands, is a hiker’s dream. With its rugged volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and endless trails, there’s something for everyone.

Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a casual walker, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to explore the island’s unique natural beauty. Our guidebook to walking in Lanzarote is your ideal companion.

Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen: two gateways to Lanzarote’s walking trails

Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen, two popular tourist resorts, are excellent bases for exploring Lanzarote’s hiking trails.

Each offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious hotels.

From these resorts you can easily access the island’s most popular hiking destinations, including the Famara cliffs, the Timanfaya coastal path and Caldera Blanca.

If you are based in Playa Blanca, you’ll be on site for the early morning fast ferry (25 minutes) to Fuerteventura, where we describe a car tour and a walk in the north of that island — together with maps and a town plan.

The Famara Circuit

The Famara fairly easy walking circuit is a popular route that takes you along the coast of Famara Beach. The trail offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s volcanic landscape.

Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming village of La Caleta de Famara, where you can enjoy a refreshing swim or a delicious seafood meal.

Timanfaya Guided Walk

As soon as you know you will visit Lanzarote, sign up for this walk! Numbers are limited to eight, and the groups fill up quickly.

The walk takes you into the heart of the volcanoes, and you will learn so much that will add to the pleasure of your stay — after you have learned to ‘read’ the landscape.

The walk to Caldera Blanca

Caldera Blanca is a dormant volcano that rises above the surrounding landscape. The walk to the summit is challenging but rewarding, with stunning views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean.

The trail takes you through a lunar-like landscape of volcanic ash and pumice.

The best time to visit Lanzarote for walking

The best time to visit Lanzarote for walking is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller.

However, the island can be enjoyed year-round, with each season offering its own unique charm. Christmas is high season, as is Easter, when prices rise.

In summer it is usually not too hot for walking, and that has become a popular time to visit (but with climate change, it is hard to predict temperatures from one year to the next).

Tips for hiking in Lanzarote

Wear appropriate clothing and footwear: Our book has suggestions for what to pack.
Bring plenty of water and snacks: Hiking can be thirsty work, so it’s essential to stay hydrated.
Respect the environment: Leave no trace and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Check the weather forecast: Lanzarote’s weather can change quickly on the heights, so it’s important to be aware of the forecast before heading out.
Don’t take risks!: It is important to carry a mobile or smartphone, to be aware of emergency telephone numbers and to tell a responsible person where you are going and what time you plan to return. Always remember, your speed will be determined by the slowest walker in your group.

Lanzarote is a hiker’s paradise, offering a diverse range of trails to suit all levels of fitness. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a challenging mountain hike, you’re sure to find the perfect trail to explore. Buy our guidebook to walking in Lanzarote.
